Three Things You Didn’t Know About Me:

Documents15

One: I was adopted.

When I was 6 years old.. and my lil brother Tommy was 4, we were abandoned by the woman who gave birth to us. She dropped us off in the middle of the night at an old Church located on a dirt road located out in the middle of nowhere in rural Elbert County. We spent the whole night alone, just my brother and me. We were found the next day by a sweet lady named Mildred who had came by to place flowers on her loved ones grave. Tommy and I were kept together at the same foster home..only to be separated a few weeks later. One year later.. and a combination of 22 foster homes between us.. we were finally united for a trial weekend trip to the same home of a couple looking to adopt a brother and sister.

That couple was Bobby & Jan. That couple… after one wonderful weekend together with us… became our Parents. Those who follow my blog have often seen posts about my Mother.. and know the love I have so often expressed for her. What they all didn’t know..because I’ve never told this story here.. was how she came to be my Mother. How she didn’t give birth to me.. but gave life to me. How she took a couple of children that nobody else wanted.. children that never knew love or tenderness … that were horrified of the darkness of night and calmed them.. loved them.. taught them to trust.. and showed them what a Mother was. Our Dad.. Bobby, the strongest, hardest working, smartest, most loving man I know.. showed us what a loving Father and Husband was. He instilled honor, ethics, courage, and compassion in us.. which made us both the people we are today. People who chose to break curse of the genetic chain which we were originally born into.

Two: My Birth Father … We made peace before his death.

When I was born my birth Father Thomas was 56 years old.. My brother and I both made peace with him.. forgave him and got to finally bond with him before his death at age 86. He was not a saint by no means.. but not the devil either. He suffered for his actions.. and unlike the woman who gave birth to us.. he did try to get my brother and I when he found out what had happened. My parents Jan & Bobby allowed Thomas to visit with us after a few years. Because of his age.. In our minds Thomas was more like a grandfather to us .. he understood that.. and knew that he could never give us what we had with Bobby and Jan. All he had asked of us.. was forgiveness and a chance to be a part of our lives. That we did.. and for the last 20 years of his life.. he lived a happy life filled with new dreams, second chances.. and grandchildren.

Three: I Have A House Full of Dogs.

I’ve always had a soft heart for the unwanted.. thus leading me to pick up and take in every stray I see. We have 4 furry babies now. We had 5 until a month ago when I had to put my precious Lil Binks to sleep.. My heart still aches for her. All of our furry babes were abandoned and brought to us by God.. Tippy was left on a dirt road, Gizzy was left when his owners moved away, Rocky was also left to fend for himself when his owners moved away and Rascal we found in the woods behind our house. They all have different personalities .. yet they all share one thing in common.. they are all gentle lil lambs.

  7. Good Lord, that is a tremedous thing to overcome. You can excelled, you are valuable, and I am glad Jan and Bobby were there to insure you knew that. I looked at my own babies after I read this, I just do not understand but I am relieved people like your parents are willing to parent when others are not... be well.

  8. What beautiful stories. Your parents are certainly angels here on earth. I have to chuckle, too, at the house full of puppies. I'd love to do the same, but I think my husband would divorce me -- our two Shepherds are MORE than enough! LOL!

  9. Oh Debbie! What a tender story and you were able to open your heart and share. My husband too was adopted when he was 6 weeks old back in 1946. 5 years ago he was reunited with his birth mother, only to lose her 3 years later. They had such a wonderful time when they found each other, and the love was enough to last him a life time. Adopted children are hand picked, birth children are given. You are special when you are hand selected. What a wonderful life you have because of the wonderful parents who chose you and your brother. Thanks for sharing and making my morning. Country hugs honey, Sherry

  14. I'm so sorry that you went through that, but I'm glad that the story has a happy ending. My own birth mother abandoned me when I was almost one. I was adopted when I was two by my aunt and uncle.

  16. Debbie, thank you for sharing your story. I once had a therapist/colleague tell me that "we're all in the same boat but, we each have different oars" That you are the loving, compassionate, warm and gentle woman you are today is both a testament to your 'adoptive' mom, but more importantly to yourself. God doesn't make junk!! I was not adopted, but my mother probably should not have had children. I'm so glad that you made peace with your biological father ... I made peace with my mother, too. Again, thank you for sharing, I love your blog ... I always take a deep breath and find such serenity and beauty when I open your blog.

  20. Gosh, but you sound like my youngest sister whose house is also filled with abandoned dogs that she rescued, LOL! Her last two came to her after Hurricane Rita, and one of them seems to have never gotten over the fear of it. I, on the other hand, am totally a cat person. I currently have 5, four Persians (former show cats) and 1 tuxedo orphan who showed up at my house late one night last November.
