It's Outdoor Wednesday at A Southern Daydreamer.. Drop by and see what all has been happening this past week.
As promised I've been keeping an eye on the lil bluebird eggs.. and lookie what has just started happening today.. We have 1 lil baby so far. I didn't want to hang around long and tick Mommie and Daddy off.. so I only got 3 pictures .. but next week they should all be here and look totally different.
Remember the Catalpa Worm tree I shared last week...
Well Guess What... The Worms have arrived too!
Notice how they have already started devouring the leaves.
The heart shaped leaves are absolutely gorgeous and they provide a thick layer of shade.
Notice the different designs on each of them.. They all share the bright neon yellow and black colors.. I just love seeing the different patterns on them.
Here are some smaller ones.. They will be as large as the larger ones tomorrow.. and the larger ones you see below will be twice their size tomorrow as well. They grow rapidly.
These lil suckers are a hot commodity for southern fishermen. The fat worms draw catfish like crazy. Their juices are the enticement for the fish. They just can't seem to resist.
We have used them for fishing in the past... and have had people stop by wanting them. They'll shake em from the trees and gather 'em up by the bucket load. Many folks freeze them for later use.. we've never done it.
When the leaves are gone.. they're gone. Usually about a week to a week and a half. Many of the worms get picked off by the birds and wasps.
One of the downsides of having them around.. the poop droppings. Below on the center vein of the leaf you'll see lil black tiny dots.. that's catalpa worm poop lol. It covers the ground underneath the trees about an inch deep. The good thing though is it's great compost and makes the soil rich.. but as you're standing around looking at em.. you hear this sound.. sounds like sleet falling.. so wear a hat!
This next shot is just a little reminder... Never leave a tiki torch unattended or have the wick to high!
I hope you learned a lil bit about catalpa worms.. and don't think to many redneck thoughts about me now lol. I'm married to Mr DNR *Department of Natural Resources* and we just love nature and all of God's glory in it.
I'm going to leave you today with a couple shots of my lil babies.. Rocky & Gizzy!
Gizzy is in dire need of a haircut.. He's got sheep herder dog bangs lol!
He had a lil itch.. and rolled around all over the ground! He was having so much fun I almost tried it myself.
It's so odd not having my sweet lil Binks around.. Gizzy & Rocky both miss Binks too.. and look for her all over the place.. as do I. We're all starting to heal.. One Day At A Time. Thank You All for All of Your Thoughtful Comments and Gracious Prayers.
Thank You For Visiting
Have A Blessed Day,

OH! Debbie,
ReplyDeleteYour little bluebird is so precious, and seeing the worms brought back a lot of memories for me. We used to have a catalpa tree and the worms loved it so.Thank you for sharing. So glad that your pain of losing Binks is getting better.
Hugs,
Sue
What a wonderful post. Your pictures are just wonderful. The pictures of the baby bird are spectacular. He looks like a little fuzz ball. Have a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteAwwww those bluebird eggs and babies are adorable. I have never heard of a Catalpa Worm tree, fasinating and your cute doggies are having a lot of fun there, happy summer days, Kathy.
ReplyDeleteHey there! I just found your blog...love the name by the way! We have several nests too...I swear we have the same Mama bird come back year after year....love your pics. cherry
ReplyDeleteAw... I love the baby birdie photos! Reminds me of when our budgies had babies. I wonder if the worms will make silk?
ReplyDeleteDebbie--I have not thought of catalpa worms or trees in YEARS!!! I used to see them growing up and you are right; they were a hot commodity! I don't think I ever heard that sleet sound though--thank goodness :)
ReplyDeleteACK!! Worms make me squirm. We have what seems like a bizillion worms in our backyard that keep creeping up onto the concrete patio and die. Blah, dead worms everywhere. Makes me shiver thinking about it.
ReplyDeleteI loved the picture of the sweet little birdie. Oh he's so sweet. Hope the siblings hatch soon to keep him company. Too cute.
Jenn
That was certainly an interesting post. My gosh those worms... No wonder the birds love your tree... wasps too huh? I didn't know they eat worms... I love learning blogs! I am one of your baby bird followers! So keep em (the photos) coming... that first baby looks like it had a mohawk! Oh and thanks for the tip on tiki torches!

Great shots, the bluebird pics look like they could be on a cover of a magazine. . .Nice pictures.
ReplyDeleteDear Debbie,
ReplyDeleteHappy Outdoor Wednesday
I love the baby bird pictures...I have never seen a bluebird in person....we have bluejays but no bluebirds
I am excited to see them grow
The worms/catepillars...that is one thing...that many in one place...would bother me
is that the only tree they eat from....I don't think I could have one of those trees
I have been catching up on your posts and I love all your beautiful flowers and I am sorry about Binks
hugs
debbie

A wonderful and very educating post for Outdoor Wednesday. Loved seeing the baby bird. We have a nest in our box. It is the second of the season.
ReplyDeleteMama Bear
Great upclose photos. Thanks for sharing. I think it is the same robins that have built a nest above my courtyard last few years. Interesting about the worm tree.
ReplyDeleteGlenda
THe baby birds are so precious...the worms ARE NOT!!! Oh ICK I wouldn't be able to go near that tree...it would give me the creepy crawlies!
ReplyDeletewow, that is so neat, what do they turn into?
ReplyDeletehave a great day.
Wow, you were not kidding when said about the worms. Interesting to have a worm tree. The little birdie was sooo sweet. Your doggies are adorable too. Sorry to hear about Binks.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Crystal
Too cool worms!! You know us and critters. But I've never heard of or seen these being a California girl. Thank for enlightening me! Hey, that would be a money tree if you shook it and sold them!
ReplyDeleteOh goodness, nothing makes me tear up faster than grief over a pet. So sorry for your loss. The worms are cute, but that tiny bird with the fine little feathers it already has is extra cute. Wish I could see something like that up close.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Little critters, large and small... I am learning to appreciate them all. (im really working on those lil nekkid baby birds) I feel my nose wrinkling up. :)
ReplyDeleteVery educational. TTFN~~Claudia
The bluebirds are great. What fun to watch them grow! We have catalpa trees, but I've never heard of those worms before! Heavens! I'm thinking we wouldn't have any catalpas if they got those worms! LOL! ~~Rhonda
ReplyDeleteYikes those worms are pretty gross and destructive. Much like many things out "there" in the world. Good visual right there on your blog actually!
ReplyDeleteBut the bird eggs were soooo SWEET. I hope they manage to grow up and go on to a happy little life. HA!
Be blessed,
Joyce
Ughghghg....I just wrote you a sweet littel comment and of course...BLOGGER ATE IT. Blah..
ReplyDeleteAnyhow....Love the bird eggs and I hope they get to grow up and become happy little birdies!
I had much more on my last one but..now I can't remember it all.
Hang in there!!!
Be blessed,
Joyce
Great shots! The birdies are precious..
ReplyDeleteWe get gypsy moth caterpillars here, very destructive, and poop all over!
That little bird is just the cutest thing......
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are great! I have been inspired by your blog and several others and have taken the plunge. I am still trying to figure out all this "blogging stuff" but I did write my first post (or whatever you call it) today. Still praying for you and your family!
Cindy
I still can't get my profile to list when I try to type it in. Could be because I really have NO clear idea what I am doing! Anyway, I'll work on that :)
